Vegas Success 2024

 Vegas Success
NDA Nationals, Las Vegas, 2024

1st Place, Doubles Cricket (w/Stephanie Shope), Division 5

1st Place, Seniors Combo, Division 1

I think as you get older, you have to pick out and focus on the events you want to do well at. At 55 I find it hard to play to be 100% every weekend. I stopped all my physical training 2 weeks ago (bike rides and weights). Then 2 weekends before tournaments (Darts Madness 2 & 3). This next week I'm going to plan my peak for the next big event. Dropping all physical 2 weeks before and 2 weeks of tournaments seems to work. I'll keep that. Now a rest week, then a 3 week on, 1 week off progression. Come back and see what I come up with.

The Darts
This weekend I chose the ....

While most people seek 90% tungsten, this dart is 80% tungsten. Just because a dart has more tungsten content, doesn't make it more accurate, it just makes it smaller. Whatever you find confident and comfortable is the best.

The say you can fit more darts in a triple with smaller diameter darts. then can't it be said for singles? How many games have I lost because my darts were too big around? Not Many. Phil Taylor used a "Chunky" dart.

Just the old school, standard cheap nylon shafts and poly folding flights. I think they fly better than molded flights. A lot of the top players use folding flights.  With that said I experiment with a lot of different products, so don't be surprised if I review molded flights.

Dart Madness #3

Wow ...I guess I saved this as a draft. Competed and won the Darts Madness tour stop #3 Aug 1st.

Its a long day of darts. 35 players showed up and were divided into 4 groups. First it's a round robin (Play everyone 3), then the winner of each group  and the top 4 point per dart averages go into  best of 11, 13, then best of 15 in the finals.

Like Is said it's a long day of darts, but with good friend the time goes by fast.

Topeka Results

I was waiting for the full tournament results, but I never got them. 3 weeks late, but here none-the-less. Well I know one result. Derek Hinkle and I won doubles.

The Topeka Dart Association ran a great tournament at the Lazy Toad Bar They will probably see me back there for a blind draw or something.

If you are in the area, check out their FB Page.

Mid-Winter Classic (Columbia MO) and 4th Triple Bull (Jefferson, Iowa) tournament Results

In the future I'm going to be more detailed about tournament results.

Mid-Winter Classic (Columbia MO).

1st Place Doubles (Mike Walters), 1st Place Mixed Triples, and 1st Place Singles 301. It was a good Saturday,

4th Triple Bull (Jefferson, Iowa) tournament Results

Friday Night was good to me. I got Mitchell Livingston as a partner, and we got 2nd. The finals ended 2:45am. The problem was getting back up at 7am to be ready to play singles at 9am  The format was good 501, Cricket, Cricket, 501, then Choice. A best of 5, double elimination tournament. I'll be ready next year. It was a good year to a lot of other local Kansas Citians,

Air Capital 2019 in Review

Air Capital 2019 in Review

It's been around 20 years since I played at the Air Capital Open. Much has changed. In particular "Dart Connect", the technology (For lack of a better word with more robust meaning) that runs the event brackets.

Along with announcing board calls, all participants get texts, or emails telling them the number of the board they are going to play on. This saves time because everybody gets the information at once. Normally the tournament spends 15-20 minutes reading off all the matches over a loud speaker. You could play your match before it's is announced. How cool is that? It really speeds things along.

Also since the scoring is kept and reported electronically via a "tablet", the results are reported at the speed of light ...(well almost). There is no balking at turning in the score sheet between matches. A couple times I hit the "Save Match" button and got a board call 5 seconds later.

I like that Dart Connect emails you the match details As they say; "You learn more when you lose, than when you win. So I'll go over my singles match loses.

My Semi Final Match against Leonard Gates. I knew a best of 9 would be tough. I just took it one leg at a time. Didn't think it would go 4-4.  Too bad it wasn't best of 3. Would nerves have gotten to me, and i would have played like game 9 instead of game 3. Who knows, but here's what really happened.

Can't Believe it's been 20 Years since I played at the Air Capital Open in 1998. (Am I old, wait don't answer that) Is it surprising to see players playing in 2018 that played in 1998. I saw a few. It begs the question. How many people who were there in 1998, also played in 1978. Or for that matter who played in 1978 played in 2018.

My Match against Tom Sawyer and Critic of my dismantling .
1. Tom starts with 3x20

2. A lot of people would close 20's, but that is throwing at a closed number. At this level you have to close and score on the numbers. In other words I don't want to throw  s20, s20, t20 for a 5 mark and have it count for 3. So I counter by throwning at 19. Not what I hoped, but I closed it.

3. Tom with the advantage of the bigger number scores and trys to close 18 following the rule of not throwing at closed numbers.

4. Now behind on points a lot of people would point on 19s. The thing is Tom is gaining some real estate. If I can get 5x18 I can close another number and regain the point lead. Even 3x18 eliminates the possibilty of Tom hitting the triple 18 with one dart, there by closing and scoring 36 points. Which is what happened.

5. Tom throws one 18s to close, and two more 20's for points.

6. Behind 60 points I have to throw for points. I'm going to need a 4 mark to get the point lead. While throwing at 17 would follow the convention the way the game has gone. I would need a 7 mark to get the point lead because it's not closed yet. So I went 19's and hitting the first triple of the match and 95 points.

7. Tom throws one 20.

8. What a break. I have the point lead, and equal amount of numbers. So I have the opportunity to close the 20. which I did, and moved on to 17's. In hind sight I should have gone for points since I had the advantage of having the biggest number to point on.  But I had 2 darts to close 17s. Even hit two 17's is a good Idea. there is a big diffence in a point war in needing 1 mark  to close a number with one dart, instead of needing 2 marks with one dart. It's practically needing 3 marks with one number unless you throw at doubles in a cricket game. but I missed and hit one 17

9. Tom throws two 17's

10 Another break. I throw two 17's to close, and one 16. Instead of 16 that should have been at 19

11. Tom throws four 16's to close getting the point lead, and closes 17's with his last dart. Had I hit a 19 instead of 16 last round I might have still had the point lead. With just mark on 16's more than likley it's going to get closed by hitting the triple.

12. I'm not sure what I did here. I imagine I got the point lead back by hitting triple 19 first dart then missed the next two darts. This is my Achilles heel lately. First dart triple miss, miss. ...or maybe I went miss, miss, triple?

13. Tom throws s16, t16, then s19. (Get out of my 19's!)

14. At 8 points down I just need one score. All I really need are for all 3 darts to count, 19 for points, then two 16's to close. I'm not sure in what order the darts were thrown, but once again I hit with one and missed the next two. In the last two rounds I've scored with 2 darts, and Tom scored with all 6. This the mental part of the game.

15. Tom throws s16, t16, then t19. to close.

16. A nine mark would help, but two 15's is what I came away with.

17. Tom throws three 15's to close. I'm sure he wanted T15, D25, 25 for the game, but new it's a game of numbers vs. Bulls.

18. I throw three Bulls

19. Tom throws T16, SB. While he has all the numbers closed and the point lead. one score of 16 makes me have to hit another bull.

20. I throw three Bulls for a slight lead

21. Tom throws T16, s16 for 64. (Everytime he has thrown at 16 he hit a triple 16 in that round).

22. I throw miss, miss Double bull for 50, not enough to counter Tom's 64 for the round.

23 Tom thows a double bull for the leg, winning by 2 points. Looking back I got to say I missed the opportunity by not using the 19 when I had it.

Game 2 Review
I ran out of triples. Or maybe my his triple container was bigger than my and had more in it? 4.4 Marks per round to my 3.0 Marks per round.

The 2019 Missouri Open and From Here Knows Where.

The 2019 Missouri Open and From Here Knows Where.

The 2019 Missouri Open is in the books. The results should be posted here soon. http://www.cmdadarts.org/

So what were my results ...in order.

Saturday
Mixed Triples Cricket: Top 4 (Made a critical error that probably cost us going to finals),
Singles 501: Out First Round (I played well, maybe too welI, busted 98 in leg 3)
Doubles 501: Top 4 (Starting to get tired, missed a lot of darts at doubles)
Singles Cricket: Didn't play (like I said, I got tired. There is more to be gained tomorow with a big dinner and proper rest)

Sunday
Mixed Triples 601: 2nd Place (Like I said, with proper rest came the finals)
Doubles Cricket: Top 8 (We just got outplayed my Eric Gregory and his partner)

From here knows where? The thing about life is, it's equally unfair for everybody. Some people are born with more talent than others. That's no excuse to not work harder than others to achive the same end. Life deals some of us a longer road to hoe, so be it.

I learned a lot from bicycle racing. I'm going apply some of those training stratagies to darts. Periodization is a form of scheduling training in phases. These phases are based upon increasing and decreasing both volume and intensity. For example you want to focus on the Governor's Cup in August. You want to develop a plan to peak around that weekend.

For the most part: as you increase intensity, you must decrease volume; conversely as you increase volume, you must decrease intensity. To put it another way. You can't practice all the time, and never compete; And you can't compete all the time, and never practice. There has to be a ratio between the two.

Macrocycles: Year Long Plan
Mesocycles: Develop a plan to achieve a certain goal
Prep Period:
  Base Period:
Build Period:
Peak Period:
Recovery Period:
Microcycle: Training Week:

Also you are going to see, I'm going to employ an amount of physical fitness. Sure it's a game of eye-hand coordination, but when does it hurt to be stronger and faster with more endurance. My example is when the home run race was going on between Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGuire. What the record for home run each each is around 50, then all of a sudden 3 guys emerge hitting 60+ a year, then it was revealed they were taking steroids. AS far as baseball pitchers go, who are the best? Mostly Bigger heavier guys. Who are the best dart players? Bigger heavier guys.

YOU WILL NOT LAUGH! YOU WILL NOT CRY! YOU WILL LEARN BY THE NUMBERS! I WILL TEACH YOU! -Gunnery Sergeant Hartman

Now for some pictures I took along the way that have nothing to do with darts.

The New Year January 2019

So the new year begins. There is a lot going on in January. First is the Missouri Open. It used to be the Missouri State Championship. But to get more participation, it's now open to anybody.

A funny story about the Missouri Championship and why I made the distinction between the tournament being a "State Championship", and an"Open". The best I ever did was to win Cricket at the Missouri Championship. My thought was, I was State Champion of Cricket, but the State Champion was only recognized for the Winner of 501. I tried to argue my point, but to no avail. What we did agree on there was a State CHAMPION (501), and State cHAMPION (Cricket) with a little "c"...Hence I got the nickname "Little c".

Then the next week the Big Boys come to this are in Wichita.

If you want to stay local, Then there is a tournament at RC's in Martin City.

2018 Woody Tournament Results

Better late than never ...I guess. Last weekend Was the "Grand Woody" tournament in Kansas City. The "Grand Woody" tournament is a Charity event that benefits "Toys for Tots",  held at Eclipse Bar and Grill.

Its called "The Grand Woody" because everyone plays with the same "Widdy Darts".
They are wood darts with turkey glued to them for flights  made for American Style DartsWiddy Dart Board, Company is a family owned and operated company that was established in 1910 in Philadelphia PA by Charles Widmeier Sr..

Here are a couple inks about American Style Darts.

The entry for every event is  1 Toy (min. $5 value) to enter the tournament or an extra $5 surcharge will be added to your first event, plus $10 for each event. Normally people go well over that amount like Michael Walters who donated 104 toys this years with the help of Terri Stevenson, Terry Barnes Maness, Melody Foster, Jo Ann Anderson, Morgan Dotson, David L. Anderson Jr., Aaron Bell, Tammie Bell, and some others.

Special thanks to Kevin Reilly, Julie Melondendorp, Bill Pittman, and Brian Greenstreet for running the event. In fact Kevin Reilly, Bill Pittman, and Brian Greenstreet have been running this event since it began 25 years ago.

....and the winners are.
Blind Draw (Record 84 Entries): Derek Hinkle and Steve Osborne

Mens Doubles: Danny "Book'm Dano" Bribiesca and Douglas Fitzgerald

Womens Doubles: Melissa Holland and Dawn Fisher Bazzell

... and for the BIG HARDWARE...Mens Singles: Clayton Hudgens

Womens Singles: Becky Sprague

...and of course the kids because we collected over 8 Barrels of toys and donated $3594 to Toys 4 Tots

We also got to see "The Corporation" back together. Back when the Kansas City dart league had over 1200 players in the 80's and early 90's, "The Corporation" was the number one team. Back then teams had 6 players.

(Steve Osborne, Pete Codrington, Dave Ryan, Dale Blankenship (5 time Winner of the Grand Woody), Bob Beard, Time Kessler, and Gary Holland
